WorkshopsWe offer empowerment-based self-defense workshops tailored to every group's needs.
Learning self-defense is a deeply personal, sometimes uncomfortable experience for people. We offer a variety of tools to choose from so that everyone feels like they have plenty of options for every situation that may arise, from annoying to life-threatening. Want to learn how to yell? Easy. Nonviolent physical defense? Yup. Teaching self-defense and communication skills to kids? We have instructors with years of experience teaching children. |
Workshop Content Warning:
Part of teaching effectively and responsibly is meeting your students where they are. Our workshops cover a variety of topics, including gender-based violence and sexual assault. We recognize that it’s natural to feel uncomfortable when discussing sexual violence, and we also understand that many of the topics we will discuss can be triggering. Workshop participants are encouraged to take care of themselves first and foremost, and can take breaks from any activity or discussion as needed. Exercise your right to refuse! However, we also encourage our students to let themselves feel uncomfortable. This is an excellent opportunity to begin growth and healing, in a space designed to support and empower you.
If you have any specific questions or concerns about the content of our workshops, please reach out to us. We will gladly answer any questions you may have.

Intro WorkshopWe have two versions of this workshop:
Co-ed workshops Our standard, two hour introductory workshop. These workshops don't expect the participants to have had any previous experience with self defense concepts and techniques. Everyone is welcome! Women's workshops All the same great information as our Co-ed workshop, but with content that is specifically tailored for ALL women, trans and cis. Nonbinary people are welcome to come in for these workshops as well. There is no previous experience with martial arts or self-defense required. 5 Week SeriesA sequence of five 1-2 hour workshops that expand and build upon the ideas introduced in the Intro Workshop. We will dive deeper into the concepts around empowerment and introduce more physical techniques. Participants are expected to attend each workshop in order to benefit the most from the training.
It is preferred, but not required, for participants to have attended an intro workshop prior to starting the Short Series. |
Online Empowerment SeriesSelf defense can be difficult to teach and learn when you can't be physically close to each other -- but that doesn't mean the need for it has gone away. In order to continue to empower and protect as many people as we can while maintaining safe and responsible social-distancing, we have designed a curriculum that can be taught entirely remotely, and learned from the comfort of home.
Similar to our 5 Week Series, this course is made up of five modules. However, we believe it would be irresponsible to teach more complex physical self defense techniques without being able to ensure safe and proper instruction or practice of them. Thus, each class has an increased focus on empowerment and awareness, with tutorials on fundamental physical techniques and concepts. Individual classes are a mix of lecture and discussion, with relevant readings, videos, and other resources provided each week. Participants will be asked to do a short journal entry each week related to that week's topic to help engage with the material. This course can be co-ed or women's only, and can be individualized to a certain age group (general, high school, college). |
Policy Regarding Transparency
The martial arts community is a notoriously insulated one. Historically, practitioners have been possessive with many of the techniques they taught. Gyms and dojos take pride in having the best instructors with the best material.
While this makes sense in a competitive environment, we believe in sharing the techniques and information we possess with as many people as possible. These kinds of classes save lives. The whole purpose behind our mission is to provide this information to anybody who wants it.
To this end, we gladly offer details of our curriculum to anyone interested. Anyone who has questions about specific content offered in our courses is welcome to ask for more detailed information, and anyone who has participated in one of our workshops has access to our library of resources related to the material we teach. This library includes readings, physical technique videos, and more.
If you have not taken one of our workshops and are interested in Empowerment Self-Defense, we can also offer suggestions and resources specific to your needs and interests.
